It's such an addictive snack! Some people know it as Puppy Chow. Whatever you call it, once you start eating it, you can't stop.
It's great for parties, or for no occasion in particular. It's also great for getting kids involved in the kitchen, because they can do most of the work.
These Cookie Monster Muddy Buddies are inspired by a famous children's TV character, a cookie-loving blue monster named Cookie Monster.
I took the classic Muddy Buddies recipe (Chex cereal coated in a mixture of chocolate and peanut butter, then tossed with powdered sugar) and added two kinds of mini cookies, and used powdered food dye to color the powdered sugar.
Muddy buddies keep, stored in an airtight container at room temperature for about a week, so adjust the recipe up or down as needed for your family. Having only one chlid in our house, I make a half-recipe.
Also, feel free to mix it up by experiementing with different kinds of chocolate—semisweet, milk chocolate, bittersweet chocolate, white chocolate—to see which is your favorite.
Cookie Monster Muddy Buddies
Cookie Monster Muddy Buddies are a sweet snack that are inspired by the cookie-loving Sesame Street monster that are perfect for after-school snacking.
Ingredients
- 1 (12-ounce) box Rice Chex cereal
- 1 ½ cups semisweet chocolate chips
- ¾ cup smooth peanut butter (traditional, not natural)
- 6 tablespoon unsalted butter
- ½ teaspoon kosher salt
- 1 ½ teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 ½ cups Dixie Crystals powdered sugar, divided
- ½ teaspoon powdered blue food dye
- 8 oz mini chocolate chip cookies
- 8 oz mini oreo cookies
- 1 cup milk chocolate morsels
Instructions
- Line a rimmed baking sheet with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper; set aside. Pour the cereal into the largest mixing bowl you own; set aside.
- Place the chocolate chips, peanut butter, butter, and salt in a medium microwave-safe bowl (start with ¼ teaspoon, then add more to taste after microwaving). Microwave on high for 1 minute. Stir, then continue microwaving in 15 second intervals, stirring in between each, until almost melted, about 45 seconds more. Remove from the microwave and stir until smooth. Stir in the vanilla.
- Pour the chocolate peanut butter mixture over the cereal and use a spatula to gently stir in a folding motion until all the cereal is evenly coated.
- Place the powdered sugar in a gallon-size zip-top bag. Add the blue powdered food dye. Seal the bag, then shake until the powdered sugar is evenly colored.
- Add the coated cereal, and shake vigorously until the cereal is evenly coated with the powdered sugar. If needed, remove the well-coated cereal, leaving the less-coated cereal, and shake again.
- Pour onto the prepared baking sheet and spread into an even layer. Let cool, about 10 minutes.
- Sprinkle the mini cookies and chocolate chips atop the muddy buddies, then transfer the whole mix to an airtight container or a clean zip-top bag if not serving immediately.
